You guys, I had the best time at the Dexter panel. The crowd, mostly remaining in Ballroom 20 from previous panels, was pumped. Like, screaming pumped. Ever since the epic season finale of the Showtime hit, everyone has been buzzing about what season seven has in store.
The audience watched a clip of what exactly happened after the heartstopping finale, but it didn’t necessarily answer any questions. Rather, the clip and resulting panel gave Dexter fans more hope and excitement rather than spoilers and anticlimactic feelings.
But the short clip wasn’t what made the Dexter panel special. I have to say, Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter may be the most charming people I’ve ever seen discuss their career... and the non-discussion of their past relationship.
Let’s get that bit out of the way first, because that’s what you guys really want to know, right? You want to know about the unbearable tension between these two exes, sitting next to each other, addressing the fact that the seventh season will loosely focus on the sexual tension between their characters. The two were relaxed and comical together. There were moments when Carpenter (who I now have an official lesbian crush on) rolled her eyes at him and he shrugged, in only the way that well off exes do. At one moment a fan asked Hall what was the greatest lie he’s ever told and he laughed, then saying "This is delicious." Jennifer looked at him in such a noticeable way that the room erupted in laughter. That must be weird right? To know that everyone (6,000+ people) know about your relationship and want every little subtext to give away the dirty secrets of your private life. But they were graceful about it and refreshingly honest and it made me like the two of them even more.
But let’s skip to the fun questions. The members of the panel were great, asking pertinent questions and creative questions to the panel. Here are the highlights:
Did the producers think they wrote themselves into a corner by having Deb find out about Dexter?
No. The producers claim that he couldn’t keep the secret forever, and that it actually opens the series up to a whole mess of story lines.
Will there ever be a "special episode" of Dexter?
Probably not. The fan asked about having a musical episode, (which may or may not be awesome?) but Michael C. said something interesting- he wanted the final season to be a bunch of finales, all different scenarios of how the series could end.
What’s the greatest part about Dexter so far?
The Trinity season. Obviously. John Lithgow was mentioned a lot in the panel, as an answer to several questions. What was the most satisfying kill for Dexter? Trinity. One of the best guest stars? Lithgow (and Mos Def).
Jennifer Carpenter is awesome. Really, really awesome.
She may have been wearing too much tanner or bronzer or whatever, but she was full of great moments. She’s very similar to Deb in the sense that she’s funny, sincere and a beautiful tomboy. The best quotes of the night came by her. Some of the best:
J: Does that make sense? I don’t know. I’m an actor.
j: (on how an actor picks his/her roles) I don’t get to choose. I audition.
J: (on how the show began) I thought I was just shooting a pilot.
But it wasn’t just the sweet but self-deprecating attitude that she portrayed, she actually had some insight on her character in the next season saying that Deb has become completely lost professionally and emotionally. She once had everything planned out but now that Dexter has presented himself, her life is in shambles.
Thus far, and I’m including last year’s experience at the New York Comic Con, the Dexter panel was one of the most enjoyable and insightful that I’ve experienced. The cast is happy and bubbly - despite the fact that they’re usually covered in blood for their job. It really got me all jazzed for season seven, which premieres September 30th on Showtime. Set those DVRs folks! And of course, check out our recaps and all Dexter news right here!
