Review: 'The Glass House' Is Full Of Cracks

Mary Oates
TVOlogy

Honestly, I wish CBS had been able to ban The Glass House from airing. Not because it’s a copycat of Big Brother (because really, what new reality show isn’t copying another one?) but just so nobody would have had a chance to watch it. At least in Big Brother, there are the Head of Household and Power of Veto competitions that give contestants the opportunity to decide their own fate. In The Glass House, there’s one team challenge, where the losing team’s captain is sent to "limbo," along with another person that the contestants vote on. The viewers then vote on which of the two will be eliminated. There’s no need for alliance, or strategy, unless you count Apollo, who has his housemates pick a card to determine who he’ll vote for, like some kind of magician. The contestants are just sitting around the house with no agency whatsoever, being talked at by a creepy female robot voice.

The worst part though? It’s not entertaining at all. The whole "viewers decide everything" concept is silly. I don’t give a f*ck what these people eat or wear, and who actually takes the time to vote on these things? The contestants are idiotic and full of themselves, but that was to be expected. And then there’s Alex, who was already a douchebag before he decided to purposely become the "biggest villain in reality TV history." Sorry, Alex, but constantly throwing out cheap insults doesn’t make you a villain, it just makes you an asshole. Of course, that probably means the viewers will keep voting him back in the house so he can continue to terrorize everyone. Big Brother has more class, and that’s saying something.

SumOlogy: Not only is The Glass House basically a lamer version of Big Brother, but it's also boring, which is the worst thing a reality show can be.

Grade: D
